Dr. Teachout is a graduate of the University Of Minnesota College Of Veterinary Medicine and now practices veterinary medicine in Chicago. She is a board member of Blessed Bonds, a fostering program for pets in need of temporary care in Chicago. She also serves as Vice President of the Board of the International Wildlife Rehabilitation Council whose major function is to provide education for wildlife rehabilitators. She has authored classes such as Fluid Therapy for Wildlife Rehabilitators and Euthanasia for Wildlife Rehabilitators. Dr. Teachout has presented talks at the National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association annual conference on topics such as collision bird medicine and clinical pathology. She co-chaired a round table discussion on animal welfare and the ethics of using captive animals for education at the International Wildlife Rehabilitation Council’s Educational Symposium last year.
She has always had a special interest in animal protection and animal welfare. She is dedicated to promoting respect for all animals, finding alternatives to animal use, furthering humane standards of care, and striving to abolish animal exploitation. She has lobbied at both the state and national level for animal protective legislation. Last year Dr. Teachout worked with the Humane Society’s Illinois state director on legislation to restrict puppy mills in Illinois. She presented a lecture to veterinary students at the University of Illinois regarding cosmetic and convenience surgeries such as ear cropping, tail docking, devocalization and declawing of cats. Recently she has worked with Mercy for Animals by providing expert opinion on their last four undercover videos obtained in their special investigations of various farm animal industries.
She is a member of the Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association, and is currently working on a graduate certificate in Animal Policy and Advocacy through the Humane Society University.
