Animal sacrifice plays a central role in important Islamic rituals, and the overwhelming majority of the world's Muslims eat meat. Is there a place in Islamic theology and law for animal welfare? Is vegetarianism compatible with Islam? This talk will examine the way that Islamic sources can be used to promote compassion for animals and support animal welfare activism. We will examine the Qur'an, the Hadith (reports of the words and actions of the Prophet Muhammad), Islamic law, Sufi mysticism, and the work of contemporary Muslim thinkers in order to see how, despite the prevalence of animal sacrifice, Islam offers another way to think about the human relationship to non-human animals.
