Duration: 20 minutes

This talk will explain the role of veterinarians in animal protection, how activists can effectively communicate with veterinarians, and why that communication is important.

Most veterinarians care about animal suffering. In fact, we have all taken an oath at graduation that, in part, swears we will use our scientific knowledge and skills to relieve animal suffering. Therefore, it is puzzling to some people when they find that their veterinarians are opposed to most if not all animal protection legislation. And when you try to talk to your veterinarian about animal welfare or protection, you may feel that they do not take you seriously or want to listen. You leave feeling frustrated because of all people, veterinarians should care. This presentation will explain some of the reasons behind veterinary resistance to change in animal welfare regulations, especially those related to farm animals, and how you as an advocate can help.
