Human rights advocates have lost touch with the fundamental truth that the oppression of nonhuman animals and the oppression of human beings arise from the same source and constitute the same crime, a fact recognized by the ancient sages who created the concepts of both human rights and animal rights. Modern human rights groups are, by and large, no more sympathetic to animal rights than are racists, sexists, homophobes, and other oppressors of human beings. So long as this circumstance prevails, animal activists should not place their hopes on alliances with human rights activists but should focus on raising the moral status of animals vis a vis humans in the society at large.
